After Jay and his family relocated to Boerne in 1988, they resided north of town along the Cibolo Creek. Many of the shops were empty and there was no art movement at the time. In 1990, Jay bought a small Sunday house type residence just off Main Street. In 1994 he had the opportunity to purchase the historic Kaiser/Oxley house at South Main and Kronkosky Street. He converted it to Jay Hester Studio/Gallery where he taught classes and displayed his art for several years.
It was there that the first Parade of Artists began as an open house studio tour. This activity grew into discussions of an Art Council for Boerne which included both visual and performing artists. The Hill Country became an attractive location for many artists during the following years and the Boerne Professional Artists was established. Jay sold his Main Street location and established Highland House Gallery next door to his residence where several artists were represented.
After selling the gallery, Jay moved into his personal studio on his property. His studio will be part of the art tour as The Parade of Artists continues to represent a varied array of artists and the public continues to explore artists’ studios and local galleries each Spring!
